Guided Or Commanded?

And the children of Israel did that which God commanded.

Does this mean the children of Israel were guided?

I say yes.

This is my understanding.

When we are beginning our spiritual journey, it makes sense that we should be commanded to do a thing.

As we grow up in our spirituality, we come to know that we are being guided.

When the children of Israel did that which was commanded of them, they were richly rewarded and Blessed in all areas of their lives.

They were being guided.

When they turned away, and did not do the thing commanded, or guided to do, suffering, pain and hurt were involved.

It is not because God did any thing to them.

It is what they did to themselves.

Or, did not do.

They did not follow the instructions.

They did not follow the guidance.

They went off track.

They did not trust and believe in the Guidance.

This is exactly what happens to us today.

Standing at the foot of Mt. Sinai looking up at the mountaintop on fire, with the ground vibrating, hearing the blast of horns, and then the voice of God, is enough to make us pay attention, and cause some of us do what we are told, for our own good.

You Are Always Being Guided!

God is still talking to us.

It is no where nearly as dramatic as standing at the foot of the mount.

But it is just as impressive today when we can hear that small, quiet voice inside that is still guiding us along our path.

I feel like it is even more dramatic to be able to recognize, and hear God’s call among all of the noisiness that is in our lives today.

This is a major accomplishment.

Most of us can’t hear the call in the form of thoughts received.

Those of us who do, often dismiss the thoughts as soon as they come through.

It is a Blessing to be able to capture a thought, and recognize it as guidance coming from our Inner Being, which is God inside of us.

We were being guided at the mount as well.

God never said “I command you”.

God said “Ye (you) shall do this, and this, and this other thing”.

He said, “And if you do these things, this is what you will have”.

God went on to say, “And if you do not do these things, this is what will happen to you”.

From the beginning, we were guided as to how to live our best lives.

From the beginning, it was always a choice.

Do this.

Live your best life.

Do that.

Your life will not be so easy.

This is how we can tell if the thoughts we receive is from God or not.

If the thought has the potential to move you forward you are being guided by God.

If the thought has the potential to keep you stuck, you are not being guided by God.

You always get to choose.

Forward movement, or, stuck.

Guided, or, not.

It seems simple enough.

The people were afraid to hear God talk directly to them.

They thought they would die if God continued talking to them.

Why?

I have no idea.

The children (of God) needed someone to hear for them, and then tell them what to do.

They told Moses you go hear what God has to say, then come back and tell us what to do.

So he did.

Moses told them, this is what God commanded.

There is no reason to be commanded.

Guidance is more than enough, and is much more effective.

I, personally, prefer hearing God talk directly to me, which he does in every way imaginable.

I want to leave you with a few suggestions as to how to tap into your own personal Inner Guidance and conversation with God.

  • Set aside a few minutes at the start of your day, before all the busyness begins, to just sit in silence.

That’s all.

Just sit.

  • Pay attention to your thoughts.

Dismiss those thoughts that do not make you feel good.

This is not guidance.

This is the stuff that does not move you forward.

Spend time with the thoughts that do feel good to you.

These thoughts open you up to possibility and new ways of being.

You are being guided.

The people stood before Mt Sinai once.

I encourage you to come to the mount for guidance on a daily basis.

  • You can take a walk.
  • Dance.
  • You can journal and write your thoughts in a book.
  • You can shower or enjoy a bath.
  • You can watch the clouds.
  • Do whatever makes you feel good.

Do any thing that allows you to pay attention to your thoughts.

Guidance is received in the form of thoughts.

Guidance feels good to you.

Otherwise, it isn’t guidance.

Self knowledge!

How is it that we always know what is true, and good, and right for us, but we live out our days like we don’t have a clue about what we are here to do?

Yesterday I shared about second guessing ourselves.

Not trusting ourselves and our Inner Guidance.

It could all be so simple, but we make life so difficult.

Could it be we love the rush of going against the tide, and then coming out, and up, from underneath?

Is it just our ignorance?

Our people truly do die for lack of knowledge.

Self knowledge!

It really is not about a lack of knowledge.

Deep down inside we always know.

Self Knowledge is Power!

Is the knowledge, and our truth, buried too deep, underneath all the bullshit we act like we believe.

I honestly don’t know what it is.

But then again, I do, because we always know.

It is not applying the knowledge.

Self knowledge!

It’s about not understanding what makes you and your life better.

It is about not applying the knowledge consistently.

Some things I know about myself.

I do not let laziness be more important than discipline.

Sometimes, to get started with a thing, in the beginning, I have to rely on discipline.

Discipline is not easy, but is very necessary.

Discipline will get me up out of bed when all I would rather do is pull the covers up over my head.

Let discipline be your friend.

At least in the beginning.

Especially, in the beginning.

Use discipline to get you going when your mind is telling you to snooze the alarm and roll over.

You do know that once you get started with a thing, you are good.

It becomes your new normal.

You begin looking forward to doing the thing.

Malcolm said it best when he said “by any means necessary”.

Do whatever it takes.

I feel like using another word for work is useful.

Self knowledge!

When I approach what I do, even that which I am choosing to do, from the place of “having to do the work“, I almost automatically want to shut down.

My mind subconsciously has a problem with “having to do the work“.

As I look at this, I see there are two parts to this equation.

“Have To Do” and “Have To Do The Work”.

I love doing everything.

But do not ever tell me what I have to do!

I have always been a hard worker.

I never give up.

I grind to the finish because I choose to.

But do not tell me what I “have to do”!

Even when you think it is for my own good.

Now about “Have To Do The Work”.

Work is such a loaded word to me.

It is full of resistance.

Who wants to go to work or have to do the work?

Not me!

Self knowledge!

I am all about getting it done!

And, therein lies my secret sauce.

I get to do the things.

I get it done.

I would much rather “get to do the things” than “have to do the work”.

It is just how my mind works.

Self knowledge!

I’m glad I understand the difference, for me, between getting to do the stuff and the things, and having to do the work.

Getting to do something brings me joy.

Having to do the work is a chore.

Simply substituting one, or two, words make a powerful difference in making my life work.

Self knowledge!

Understand the words that inspire you.

Let the words that trigger you go.

Say thank you. Job well done. Word, I now set you free.

Self knowledge!

Self knowledge helps me understand what is true, and good, and right for me, and allows me to be about what I am here to do.

Self knowledge lets me get shit done!

Stay The Course!

It isn’t easy to trust yourself, but Stay The Course!

We all have an Inner Guidance System that is always calling you forward.

It is that quiet voice that is hard to hear among the ruble that is trying to persuade you otherwise.

This Guidance is the thought that is always in the back of your mind that you can’t forget even as you turn towards, and chase everything else, which seems so attractive and inviting.

STAY THE COURSE!

How do you Stay The Course?

Simply by understanding that it is important to give yourself, not the luxury, which it is, but it is important to give your first 15 – 20 minutes to yourself in the stillness, right after you wake up to allow yourself to hear that quiet voice that gets lost among the shuffle of life.

Some call this meditation.

This small step, in this small amount of time, first thing in the morning is all you need to Stay The Course!
